“The Covenant of Salt”

Salt was regarded as a necessary ingredient of the daily food. All sacrifices offered to Jeh were to contain it. Thus a close relationship between ‘Salt and covenant making’ occurred.

When men ate together they became friends, thus the Arab expression “There is salt between us.” “He has eaten of my salt”, meaning he has partaken of hospitality which cemented friendship. ISBE p 728, Covenant of Salt.

Custom of pledging friendship or confirming a covenant [compact] by eating food containing salt is still retained among Arab speaking people’s. The Arab word for “salt” and for “compact” or “treaty” is the same.

Doughty in his travels inarabia appealed more than once to the belief of the Arabs in the “salt covenant”, to save his life. Once an Arab has received in his tent even his worst enemy and has eat salt [food] with him, he is bound to protect his guest as long as he remains. ISBE p 2664, Salt.

~~~>Salt also a preservative and became symbolic of an enduring covenant. Thus Salt symbolizes Faith and loyalty. This became a ceremony or ritual that ratified a treaty.

Numbers 18:19  All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer unto the LORD, have I given thee, and thy sons and thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: it is a covenant of salt for ever before the LORD unto thee and to thy seed with thee.

‘It is a covenant of salt’ for Aaron and the Priesthood, their inheritance was the LORD, they would have no inheritance in the Land. Numbers 18:20.

“Covenant”, berit, 1285 is used 250 times in the O.T., meaning covenant, pledge, compact, treaty, agreement. A berit may abe made between individuals, between a King and his people, or by God with his people.

We find this “covenant” in Gen 17:7 and is the foundation of all covenants and bible promises upon which we stand today! In this God pledges he will be God to Abraham and his descendants forever!

Genesis 17:7  ¶And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.
8  And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.
9  And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations

We see the above covenant affirmed by:

And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.

2 Samuel 7:10
Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime,

2 Samuel 7:11
And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house.

2 Samuel 7:12
And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.

He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.

2 Samuel 7:14
I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:

2 Samuel 7:15
But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.

Jeremiah :

Jeremiah 33:17  ¶For thus saith the LORD; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel;

Jeremiah 33:24  Considerest thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which the LORD hath chosen, he hath even cast them off? thus they have despised my people, that they should be no more a nation before them.
25  Thus saith the LORD; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth;
26  Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.

The above was given to Jeremiah in the court of the prison and one of the scriptures he writes, we have quoted as Gentiles and is among the favorites of scripture:

Jeremiah 33:1  ¶Moreover the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, saying,
2  Thus saith the LORD the maker thereof, the LORD that formed it, to establish it; the LORD is his name;
3  Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

Paul in:
Romans 9:4  Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;
Romans 11:1  ¶I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
Romans 11:29  For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance

The Inclusion of the stranger in the inheritance of Israel:

Through proclamation by the Lord:
Below, through law by the LORD, allowances were made for strangers to become as homeborn and also to receive inheritance!

Exodus 12:47  All the congregation of Israel shall keep it.
48  And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the passover to the LORD, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof.
49  One law shall be to him that is homeborn, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among you.

Ezekiel 47:21  So shall ye divide this land unto you according to the tribes of Israel.
22  And it shall come to pass, that ye shall divide it by lot for an inheritance unto you, and to the strangers that sojourn among you, which shall beget children among you: and they shall be unto you as born in the country among the children of Israel; they shall have inheritance with you among the tribes of Israel.
23  And it shall come to pass, that in what tribe the stranger sojourneth, there shall ye give him his inheritance, saith the Lord GOD.

“Dwell, sojourn” 1481, to lodge, temporarily reside as a stranger among other people. ‘Temporary residence status’.

Remember we are ‘strangers in the world’, love not the world, looking for a city as Abraham!

Through faith of Abraham, Through line of David, through Christ!

Galatians 3:28  There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
29  And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise

Ephesians 3:6  That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:

Ephesians 2:12  That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
13  But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
14  ¶For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

Acts 11:18  When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life

Revelation 7:9  After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;
10  And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.

The Warning of the LORD about what will enter into the city, the temple, and “Lots wife”!

Ezekiel 44:6  And thou shalt say to the rebellious, even to the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; O ye house of Israel, let it suffice you of all your abominations,
7  In that ye have brought into my sanctuary strangers, uncircumcised in heart, and uncircumcised in flesh, to be in my sanctuary, to pollute it, even my house, when ye offer my bread, the fat and the blood, and they have broken my covenant because of all your abominations.
8  And ye have not kept the charge of mine holy things: but ye have set keepers of my charge in my sanctuary for yourselves.
9  Thus saith the Lord GOD; No stranger, uncircumcised in heart, nor uncircumcised in flesh, shall enter into my sanctuary, of any stranger that is among the children of Israel.

Revelation 21:27  And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

The Antitype of the Faithfulness and preservation of Salt as seen in Lots wife!

I have a very old bible Dictionary and in it reads the following on the ‘Salt sea’:
Salt-sea:
the name of that lake at the south-east of the Holy land which separated it from the country of the Moabites in Gen 14:3; Deut 3:17. It is also called the Dead sea, the sea of Sodom, and the sea of the Desert.

Close by it if not under it once stood the cities of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Ziboim. Its waters are in the highest degree salt, bitter, and nauscous; and of such specific gravity that a man can scarcely sink in it. The land around it is gloomy and barren, and an awful silence hands over this lake.

To the point of the above cites, this dictionary says “on account of the extreme wickedness of their inhabitants, were consumed with fire from heaven, and swallowed up by an earthquake.

Genesis 19:17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.

Genesis 19:24 ¶Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;
25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
26 ¶But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt

Remember Lot’s Wife: Stern Warning from the Lord to us today!

Lots Wife: the woman unknown by name, is mentioned in Gen 19:15-17 and in Luke 17:32 by our Lord. Yet it stands as a staunch warning to all today. She is commanded along with Lot her husband, and two daughters to flee the doomed city which will see judgment. They are ‘laid hold of by angelic visitors in their effort to hasten the slow departure of the group.’ In verse 26 of Gen 19 we see where she alone of the group turned back to see and was turned into a pillar of salt. She disobeyed the Lord, her heart was in Sodom and not with the Lord! Clear disobedience and the moral state it implied is held up by our Lord in Luke 17 as an example.

Adding to this is Josephus the historian!
Josephus says in his Antiquities, I, XI, 4; “She was changed into a pillar of salt”, the words, “for I visited it, and it remains now.” ISBE Lot, Lots wife; pg 1931.

Luke 17:26
And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.

Luke 17:27
They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.

Luke 17:28
Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;

Luke 17:29
But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.

Luke 17:30
Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.

Luke 17:31
In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.

Remember Lot’s wife.

Casting aside the example of judgment which befell!

Because of the healing properties that people claim to reside in the waters, is has become a wonder and an attraction for many years. Little does it come to mind the judgment that befell that area long ago. Judgment for the sins of men. Little do people realize this judgment is coming again on the whole world. !

‘Salt Sea’, Dead Sea: ‘Online travel site mentions’; ‘sea of Lot’, associating the area with Lot and the biblical account, yet no mention of judgment nor why of course.

The Dead Sea (Hebrew Yam Hamelach, “Salt Sea”; Arabic Bahr Lut, “Sea of Lot”) lies between Israel and Jordan, 398m/1,306ft below sea level, making it the lowest point on the surface of the earth. It is a “dead” sea because of the high salt content (25-30%, compared with 3.5% in the Mediterranean) of its water, in which neither plants nor animals can live.

Salt sea drying up:

Diversion of sweet water from the Jordan river since 1950, by both Jordan and Israel, has reduced to less than the half the flow of water from the Jordan river into the Dead Sea.

Today, water evaporation is faster than the water supply and the sea is gradually shrinking. Over the last 30 years, water levels have dropped 25 meters.

This fall of the Dead Sea level has caused another strange and problematic phenomenon in the area. At points where rivers flow into the Dead Sea, (such as Nahal David and Nahal Arugot in the Ein Gedi area), the water is absorbed by the sandy ground and streams underground into the Sea. Because of the fall in the Dead Sea level, the underground rivers flow faster, and carry clay sediments: thus large underground caves have been formed, which sometimes collapse unexpectedly, and people have fallen down holes a few meters deep.

The Covenant of Salt, the Believer today!

ONE FOLD!

John 10:16  And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

1. Our inheritance is the LORD! Same as the Priests in Israel.
2. We’re to have ‘temporary residence status’ in the world!
3. As gentiles we have gained inheritance, but God is not done with Israel Romans 11!
4. The city, will not allow any thing that defiles, clothed strange, i.e. ‘Sons of God’ Pure!

We are Salt:

The believer today is the Salt, the covenant made through Jesus Christ, sealed with his blood, the blood of the covenant. As Salt, we are preservative, we are to be loyal, faithful, and as Jesus is the covenant, the sacrifice for our sins, we become the salt in the sacrifice, the offering. We are that Salt today, walking faithful. Jesus spends time in Matthew 5-7 telling us the characteristics of Salt that God expects. It is in that context that he says, “ye are the salt of the earth”.

Why do we read the Word and follow his commandments? So we can know how to please God and then follow through, by faith and love for Him.

Matthew 5:13  ¶Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
Luke 14:34  Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

Salted With Fire, Sacrifice Salted with Salt!

In this context Jesus had spent time telling people about the members of your body causing you to sin. That in so doing, we should then cut off that part. Here in this teaching we find how important it is to walk in His teachings. For as his children, we have his ‘fire’ the Holy Ghost and fire, of which we are baptized with!

Matthew 3:11  I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

1. Spirit of truth shall testify of Jesus!
2. Spirit of truth guide you in all truth!
A. He shall not speak of himself
B. What he shall hear, that shall he speak
C. He shall show you of things to come!
3. Comforter came when Jesus Ascended to heaven
A. He came to reprove the world of sin because they believe not on Christ
B. He came to reprove the world of righteousness, because Christ is with his Father [to reveal what is righteous with God and the unrighteousness of the world.]
C. He came to reprove of judgment because the prince of this world is judged! [to expose the judgment to come upon all sin and to bring those who will hear the Fathers command to repent unto him!]

4. As Salt, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, the Holy Ghost is in us and we are his vessels to use, as Salt we are the witness to the truth of Christ and his mission! Thus we are Salt, the preservative, Salt the faithful and loyal ingredient to preserve what God sends us to save through Christ, faith, and our testimony.

John 15:26  ¶But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
John 16:13  Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

John 16:7  ¶Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
8  And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9  Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10  Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
11  Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

Mark 9:49  For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.
Mark 9:50  Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.

We are Kings and Priests to God!

Revelation 1:6  And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
Revelation 5:10  And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth

Jesus became the first Sacrifice, first fruits! He took up his cross, we are to take up our cross!

Acts 8:32  The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth

John 10:15  As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.

We are the Sacrifice to God!

This doesn’t mean we are going to be killed! This doesn’t mean we will face bloodshed. In many countries this is so. But what it means is that we are to give: Testimony of Jesus Christ, live as Salt and Light, knowing we are redeemed by the ‘blood of the covenant’, and not to fear death, i.e. we are not love our lives even unto the death if that occurs

We are to simply live for him in this wicked generation!

Romans 12:1  ¶I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service

Romans 8:36  As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter
37  Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us

We are his sheep, we then are to follow his example!

Matthew 16:24  ¶Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
25  For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
26  For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
27  For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works

John 10:26  But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.
John 10:27  My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

We are to love not our lives to death, while keeping the testimony of Jesus and the commandments of God!

Matthew 10:16  ¶Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
Revelation 12:11  And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

We are to be, followers of God, as his children, walking in love, as Christ as loved us!

Ephesians 5:1  ¶Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
2  And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
3  ¶But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;
4  Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
5  For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
6  Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
7  Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
8  For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light

John 14:15  ¶If ye love me, keep my commandments.
John 14:21  He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
John 14:23  Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
