“Our Theme for this year 2010 is ‘Opening the Door with Faith to this Year’. We do not tread forward with trepidation, i.e. ‘With a feeling of alarm of dread’, as many who walk in this world in darkness, nor do we walk with fear, i.e. ‘An emotion experienced in anticipation of some specific pain or danger (usually accompanied by a desire to flee or fight)’ “

“Eyes Fixed on HIM, Your Walk Established in Him”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Intro:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We are in the Light, and in HIM, who is truth, and as such, He has given us neither a spirit of alarm or dread, but as scripture saith:

2 Timothy 1:7  For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Further as those in the world will, with all things spinning out of control, fear shall seize upon them!

Luke 21:25  And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
26  Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

One Psalm in particular comes to mind here for those who know the God of Jacob, the LORD, YWHW, and our Father of the blessed only begotten Son of God, Jesus Christ, Yeshua Ha Massiach!

Psalms 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
2  Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
3  Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
4  There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.
5  God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.
6  ¶The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.
7  The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
8  Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth.
9  He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.
10  Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
11  The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

Part I: Establishing and Verifying the Witness of the Apostles

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The First Epistle to John, written about 90 AD, by the Apostle John. Early strong Christian tradition gives that John spent his latter years at Ephesus. The style and internal evidence also points to the same author of the Gospel of John as well.
This letter was written during tremendous upheaval of ‘gnosticism’ which would later give rise to its growth and threat to the church. The idea of this ‘gnostic wisdom’, taught that matter is essentially evil -i.e. the body and all that surrounds it; while the spirit is essentially good. As a result, the teachers of this doctrine came out from among the church itself and denied the ‘incarnation of Christ’ and the ‘resurrection’.
Gnosticism, greek ‘gnosis’ meaning ‘knowledge’. This knowledge came by mental enlightenment and only to elite spiritual ones, not to rank and file believers. They ran the gauntlet of seeking and walking in intellectual pursuits for faith and kept speculation above the basic gospel.
The gospel on the other hand is for the whole body of believers to know, walk in, and possess the apostolic teaching.
1 John 2:20  ¶But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
21  I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
22  Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
23  Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
24  Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.
25  And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
26  These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.
27  But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
Gnostic teachings in first century: Two main corridors of teaching. We have this in many heresies today and teachings!~
1. They taught that the true God could not indwell a material body of flesh and blood. Therefore, in their distortion, taught that the body Jesus possessed was not real but merely apparent. John wrote against this:
1 John 2:22  Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
23  Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
1 John 4:3  And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
Luke 24:39  Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have
2. They taught that since the evil human body was merely an envelope for the spirit within and since nothing the body could do could affect the inner spirit, ethical and moral distinctions or requirements were not relevant. John also answers this:
1 John 2:4  He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5  But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
6  He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
1 John 2:15  Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
1 John 3:3  And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
1 John 3:7  Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8  He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9  Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10  In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother
1 John 5:18  ¶We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
The Elder Statesman of Love and faith here, one who walk with and handled of the ‘Word of Life’ reveals at the start our Hope, which was their Hope;
Our Hope is based upon First hand witnesses of Him who was from the beginning, John 1:1 and 1 John 1:1!
Compare the two:
John 1:1
 ¶In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God
1 John 1:1
¶That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
It was to this ‘Word’, That which was from the beginning, that the Apostles:
1. Which we have heard
2. Which we have seen with our eyes
3. Which we have looked upon
4. Our hands have handled
5. The ‘Word of Life’
This is ‘in whom’ we believe!
Again he says in verse two:
1. The life was manifested
2. We have seen it
3. We bear witness to it
4. We shew unto you that eternal life
5. The eternal life with was with the Father and was manifested to us
1 John 1:2
(For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
And Again John says further to reinforce the faith of those he is speaking to!
1. That which we have seen
2. That which we have heard
3. This we declare unto you
Why do they do this, declare what they have seen and heard?
1. That you may have fellowship with us [those who have seen, heard, and handled of the Word of life]
2. Truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.
3. He is writing these things so that your joy may be full!
1 John 1:3
That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
1 John 1:4
And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
Part II: Declaring the Message of the ‘Word of Life’ to his followers
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

John now brings home the difference between the ‘knowledge’ of men who walk in the vanity of their minds and that ‘knowledge’ which proceeds from the Father.

The Apostle Paul also puts it this way to the Corinthians!
1 Corinthians 1:20  Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

1 Corinthians 1:21  For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe

Man’s fleshly wisdom cannot know God, neither can Satan, who is the Father of lies. Neither can his army of deceiving spirits and demons. The message all these bring are tainted with sin and rebellion against God.

John points out who are the true believers to whom he writes in the beginning and now he says, this is the ‘message’:
1. The message we have heard of him
2. The message they now declare unto you
3. God is light
4. In him is no darkness at all

1 John 1:5
¶This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

Thus, John points out, unlike those who twist the truth, those who really know God, that is:
1. Those people who say they ‘have fellowship with him’
2. If those people walk in darkness
3. Then they are liars and are not of the truth!
4. But we must walk in the light, as our Savior Jesus Christ is the light
5. By doing this we will then have fellowship with each other
A. Both with Christ and us together
B. Also with Us and the brethren who are walking with Christ in this manner!
6. As a result of this fellowship in walking in the light of Christ as Christ himself would do, the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanes us from all sin!

1 John 1:6
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

1 John 1:7
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

John tells us now the truth of Sin and the power of the ‘propitiation of Christ’

The truth about Sin!
1. John points out that if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and Gods truth is not in us!
2. We have sin, but if we confess our sins, our God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
3. Further is we say we have not sinned, we then make God a liar and thus his word is not in us!

1 John 1:8
¶If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:10
If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

The truth about not sinning: Johns words here in chapter two and verse one say:

1. My little children, these things write I unto you, ‘that ye sin not’. , here we find that the place where people sin not
2. But John also puts right after it, knowing that Men may sin, so he says, ‘and if any man sin’, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
3. He is the ‘propitiation for our sins’, hilasmos, 2434, Christ, through his sacrificial death, as appeasing the wrath of God on account of sin. It also pictures his death as expiatory, providing a covering for sin. By means of the atoning death of Christ, God can be merciful to the sinner who believes in Him and reconciliation is effected.

1 John 4:10  Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

1 John 2:1
¶My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

1 John 2: 2
 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Part III: Tests of Knowing Him, of Fellowship with God & of Christ

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
These tests, or the way to know those in Christ truly, follow the truth, that without faith and belief none of this is possible.
“He that cometh to God, must believe he is and he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him”
We have already been told to ‘walk in the light’ as ‘he is in the light’, that in itself is the main discernment for knowing the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. Our whole being, mind, body, and soul are entwined in this, walking as he walked! This is our Goal.
The first test, then is walking in the light as he is in the light, which means that if we walk in darkness, we lie and do not the truth!
1 John 1:6
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
The Second test, is to ‘keep his commandments’!
If we say we know him, and we can say anything, the proof of this is ‘do we keep his commandments’? The test is simple: “ He that saith ‘I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar and the truth is not in him’
1. If you do keep his word, then the love of God is perfected
2. This means that by this, we know that we are in him, if we keep his commandments
3. If you abide in Christ and the Father, then you must walk as Christ himself walked
1 John 2:3
¶And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
1 John 2:4
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
1 John 2:5
But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
1 John 2:6
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
The Commandment both Old and New: Here, John refers to the old commandment which from the beginning they had known but also one that is new since it brings new depth and scope to it.
The Commandment from the Beginning: The commandment these believers had known since first coming to know Christ was that they Love one another for God is love. God so loved the world that he sent his only Son in the world to save them that believe. The Son so loved the Father and us that he came.!
1 John 3:11  ¶For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
1 John 3:23  ¶And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment
1 John 4:21  And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
The New Commandment: Our Lord gave Love a new standard, for he came and died on the cross for our sins. He gave his life for us, therefore, this commandment has a higher level to it, one that says, not just love, but that you love one another as I have loved you!.
John 13:34  A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
John 15:12  This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
1 John 2:7
¶Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
1 John 2:8
Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
The example of Love is if we love our brother or if we hate our brother. If we say we know Him and hate our brother we are in darkness, but if we love our brother, then truly we walk in his Light. Those believers who say they love the Father and the Son and hate their brother [those who also know the Father and the Son, and are in him] are walking in darkness, do not know where they are going, because they are blinded by the darkness they walk in!
1 John 2:9
He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
1 John 2:10
He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
1 John 2:11
But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
*Darkness here is scotia, 4653, evil, darkness, sin. In the N.T. it is a metaphor for ignorance of divine truth and mans sinful nature, it also points to everything earthly or demonic that is enmity with God.
John 12:46  I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
Darkness defined here is all that is against God, opposed to do his will:
1. Loving the world
2. Loving the things in the world
3. Loving lust of the flesh
4. Loving the lust of the eyes
5. Loving the pride of life
6. Not loving God enough to do his will
1 John 2:15  Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever
The Third Test discerning and keeping the truth:
The truth is not in human reasoning! The light of Christ delivers from the power of sin and darkness, this cannot be found by mans knowledge or wisdom!
Heretics and true believers will be in the world together, as will a ‘spirit of error’ and a ‘spirit of truth’. It is here that the believe needs to discern and keep the truth before God.
The main Spirit John speaks of is the ‘Spirit of Antichrist’
You know the truth, and because you know it:
1. Antichrist is here, there are many of them -antichrists!
2. They -antichrists- went out from among the body of believers
3. They separated themselves, from the apostolic doctrine, to present themselves
4. Thus they were made manifest as anti christ, not of those who knew and follow Christ and his commandments.
5. They denied Jesus Christ came in the flesh these are liars
6. They deny the Father, he that denies the Son who came in the flesh as the only begotten of the Father also denies the Father who sent him.
1 John 2:18
¶Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
1 John 2:19
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
The Spirit that confesses Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God:
1 John 4:1  ¶Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2  Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
Paul to the Romans: Confessing Jesus Christ came:
Romans 10:8  But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
9  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11  For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
The Spirit that does not confess Jesus Christ came in the flesh is not of God: It is the spirit of antichrist!
1 John 4:3  And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
Jesus, he that hateth me hateth my Father also:
He is a liar that denies Jesus is the Christ, he is antichrist that denies the Father and the Son!
John 15:22  If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin.
23  He that hateth me hateth my Father also.
24  If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.
1 John 2:22
Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
23  Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also
No lie is of the truth, a truth filled with part lie, is a lie, a half truth equals a full lie, your of the truth, so stick with the truth.
The full truth here, as a believer, you have an anointing, an unction from the Holy One, and you can follow the Apostolic teachings handed down, you can know him. You know the truth, even though, many are the false hoods today!
We have already discussed many basic and fundamental truths and ways to know them that are of the truth!
1. You have an anointing
2. You know the truth
3. This truth set you free
4. You have the comforter
5. Therefore let that which you heard from the beginning, this refers to the true apostolic doctrine John and the apostles taught, along with the comforter the Holy Ghost that came on Pentecost.
6. Let this abide in you, by reading the Word, praying, and letting the Holy Ghost shine the word into your heart, teaching you.
1 John 2:20
¶But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
1 John 2:21
I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
2 Corinthians 1:21
 Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;
1 John 2:24
Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.
1 John 2:25
And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
1 John 2:26
These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.
1 John 2:27
But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
1 John 2:28
¶And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.
1 John 2:29
If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.
If the teaching you are being given leads you away from the Love of God and His son, which is revealed in love of the brethren, then it is against the test of love and is a ‘spirit of error’. Many believers today have followed ‘spirit of error’, allowing some aspect of breaking away from Gods truth as revealed in the doctrine of Christ and his apostles.
The example given here is love of the brethren, 1 Jn 3:4-23; loving not in word only but in deed.
The Spirit of Error:
The knowledge of the truth, by discernment of the ‘Spirit of error’ and the ‘Spirit of Truth’
Speaking of the ‘Spirit of error’, John points out the truth of his. We have discussed some of this earlier, but now we come to the pont that if we are of God then:
1.“He that knoweth God” will hear us”!
2. “He that is of the world, will not hear us”!
3. “He that is of the world” the world will hear them”!
4. The voice of them that are of the world will speak thus: 1 jn 2:15-16
a. They will generate the ‘lust of the flesh’
b. They will generate the ‘lust of the eyes’
c. They will generate the ‘Pride of life’
d. They will do all this because they have rejected the love of the truth, following the spirit of error and the spirit of Anti Christ!
1 John 4:2
Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
1 John 4:3
And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
1 John 4:4
¶Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
1 John 4:5
They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
The Spirit of Truth, the comforter, the Holy Spirit in us:
1. Will testify of Christ, the only begotten of God t he Father
2. He will bear witness
3. He will reprove the world of sin, because they believe not
4. He will reprove the world of righteousness, the voice of the Father and the Son for righteouseness in this world
5. He will reprove the world of judgment, exposing that men will face a penalty for their deeds!
6. He will guide you into all truth
7. He shall speak what he hears from the Father and Son
8. He shall show you things to come
9. He will glorify Christ Jesus
10. He will take of Christ and give it unto you, his beloved saints who follow him and abide in him
11. He shall take all that the Father has, which are Jesus Christ’ as well, and will show it to you.
12. He will not love the world, but will bring a message to those in t he world of the Fathers love and the Sons ‘propitiation’ for sins!
John 15:26
 ¶But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
John 15:27
 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.
1 John 4:6
We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
John 16:7  ¶Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
8  And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9  Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10  Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
11  Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
12  I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
13  Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
14  He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
15  All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
Conclusion: The victory that overcomes the world: even our faith!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

1 John 5:1
¶Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.

1 John 5:2
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

1 John 5:3
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

1 John 5:4
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
