Israel finds herself today being told by Moses that the Midianites will be destroyed. Israel was to war against the Midianites for these were the ones who plotted to bring curse and destruction upon Israel. Israel fell in the ‘sins of Balaam’ who had conceived a plot with Midian to see Israel fall away from blessing with their God. Which they did in the idolatry with the women of Midian.
Israel Refuses Warning of the Prophet
Jer 2:1 Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Jer 2:2 Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.
Jer 2:3 Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD.
Now having recovered from this sin, Israel is now instructed to go against Midian. They did so and destroyed the entire land, people, and all parts of Midian. Israel took captive animals, women, and children. After the war, Israel brought before Moses all the company taken captive. Moses was mad and asked why they have left the woman alive, for these were the very women who sinned in the Balaam plot to see Israel commit whoredoms before the Lord. As a result all the woman who knew men were slain and only the woman children who had not known men were kept alive. This record illustrates a people, Israel who had learned Obedience and saw the Lord working in their lives to bring them into the land.
However, Israel in the latter portion of this study today finds herself in trouble. Disobedience, rebellion, whoredoms, and all manner of evils plagued Judah. Israel by this time had split into two kingdoms after Solomons reign due to his sin of falling away from the Lord his God. Now Judah whom Jeremiah of a Priestly line was sent would receive final warnings until the destruction of Judah. Jeremiah was to warn this disobedient Israel who had fallen into wayward sins. Yet Israel here in all her rebellion still had priests, the temple, and Jerusalem. In all this, Israel would not listen and even come against Jeremiah and his message. Today we see the lesson, “Christian as with Israel, Be sure your sins will find you out!”
Israel Obedient and following the Lord
Israel rises in the name of the Lord to fight Midian and slaying Balaam
Num 31:6 And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand of every tribe, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the holy instruments, and the trumpets to blow in his hand.
Num 31:7 And they warred against the Midianites, as the LORD commanded Moses; and they slew all the males.
Num 31:8 And they slew the kings of Midian, beside the rest of them that were slain; namely, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword.
Num 31:9 And the children of Israel took all the women of Midian captives, and their little ones, and took the spoil of all their cattle, and all their flocks, and all their goods.
Num 31:10 And they burnt all their cities wherein they dwelt, and all their goodly castles, with fire.
Num 31:11 And they took all the spoil, and all the prey, both of men and of beasts.

Nevi’im: The Hebrew word for a prophet, navi (Nun-Beit-Yod-Alef) comes from the term niv sefatayim meaning “fruit of the lips,” which emphasizes the prophet’s role as a speaker.

Israel warned, Be Obedient and wholly follow the Lord or your sin will find you out
Num 32:10 And the LORD’S anger was kindled the same time, and he sware, saying,
Num 32:11 Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:
Num 32:12 Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the LORD.
Num 32:13 And the LORD’S anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed.
Num 32:14 And, behold, ye are risen up in your fathers’ stead, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the LORD toward Israel.
Num 32:15 For if ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and ye shall destroy all this people.
Num 32:16 And they came near unto him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones:
Num 32:17 But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
Num 32:18 We will not return unto our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance.
Num 32:19 For we will not inherit with them on yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward.
Num 32:20 And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the LORD to war,
Num 32:21 And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the LORD, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him,
Num 32:22 And the land be subdued before the LORD: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the LORD, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the LORD.

Rise and Call of Jeremiah; Prophet of God warning Israel
Jer 1:15 For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the LORD; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah.
Jer 1:16 And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands.

Rev 3:18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
Rev 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
