Judgments, instructions given by God to Moses on how the people would act, be judged, and live accordingly with each other. This week we continue in Chapter 23 of Exodus. We begin with a warning neither to raise a false report” nor to join with the wicked “to be an unrighteous witness”. Here we have a good judgment which warns Israel to “not follow a multitude to do evil”. These are definite warnings, judgments, and laws which in America we would do well to follow. The false report is a “false witness” and the latter is a warning to not join with evil men to pervert justice.”

This section has many judgments that teach people to live accordingly to Gods laws. These laws, as we have seen; deals with people not doing evil, treating others evil, bearing false witness, or perverting justice. In addition this section goes into one I believe should be the mantra for our Government, congress, businessmen or women, bankers, lawyers, and the rest of us. “take no gift”, for the taking of such “gift blindeth the wise” and perverteth the words of the righteous.” Would our land be better off if people in power did not take gifts? The taking of such gifts moves those who receive them to consider the requests of those who gave them such gifts. They literally move the hands of justice, fair play, and honesty in the opposite direction.

Ex 23:
1 Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness. [bearing false witness]
2 Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment: [don’t join with evil men to pervert justice]
8 And thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous.
